Stronger Together for Data Science – Community Workshop in Bochum Moves Initiative Forward
On March 1920, 2025, the first cross-regional community meeting of the Data Science / Digital Science Initiative took place in Bochum. The initiative, originally launched by the DSC at the University of Bremen together with other partners, was further developed and strategically aligned during the workshop with strong community engagement.
Hosted at the Hochschule Bochum and organized by the local team – especially Christian Bockermann and Lars Michael – the event offered a space for exchange, networking, and defining concrete next steps toward long-term collaboration.
The goal of the meeting was to discuss the future of the community: How can we ensure sustainable exchange? What structural conditions are needed? And how can shared goals and positions be made more visible? These and other questions were discussed in multiple sessions. The social event at the Fiege brewery also offered plenty of opportunity for informal exchange.
Initial ideas and perspectives:
- Discussions around a joint position paper are continuing in a dedicated working group. The goal is to highlight shared priorities, needs, and potentials within the Data Science / Digital Science community.
- A formal organizational structure – potentially in the form of an association – is also being explored to support long-term collaboration.
- Regular in-person meetings are planned to strengthen the community exchange:
- 📍 Fall 2025: Half-day workshop on September 16 as part of INFORMATIK 2025 in Potsdam (Submit contribution here)
- 📍 Spring 2026: Community meeting in Bielefeld, hosted by colleagues from BiCDaS
We are truly grateful for the great commitment shown by the community – and warmly invite everyone to get involved in the next steps!
