The DSC supports a research stay at the Data Science Institute (DSI) at Columbia University

The award of this DSC Seed Grant to Prof. Dr. Nicole Megow supports the establishment of international collaborations between researchers at the University of Bremen and Columbia University, as well as other institutions, in New York City. The goal is to work on joint research projects in the emerging field of learning-augmented algorithm design.

This DSC Seed Grant aims to enable collaborative research projects in the field of learning augmented algorithms. The plan is to establish different relations with researchers of the Data Science Institute at Columbia University and other institutions in New York City. To initiate this international cooperation, DSC Seed Grant recipient Prof. Dr. Nicole Megow is going to visit the Data Science Institute at Columbia University as an Adjunct Senior Research Scientist for three months this summer. The stay also includes planned visits at Cornell Tech and NYU (New York University).

The main research area of the collaboration is the topic of algorithms under uncertainty and theoretical analysis of decision-making methods under uncertainty. The focus will be on models and analyses beyond traditional worst-case analysis, particularly on the recently emerging model of Learning-Augmented Algorithm Design. This model, also known as Algorithms with Predictions, is an approach to integrate imperfect predictions, such as machine-learned predictions, into algorithm design while still achieving provable performance guarantees. The goal is to develop and implement new research questions and projects in these areas.

The main intent of this DSC Seed Grant project is the establishment of long-term relations with renowned scientists from different institutions in New York City. It is also supposed to pave the way for future postdoc visits and student exchanges. In addition, the project could lay the foundation for a connection between the Data Science Institute at Columbia University and the Data Science Center at the University of Bremen.
