SHORT PROFILE
Marcello Gugliotta has a strong background in geology and sedimentology. He began his academic career obtaining a BSc in Geosciences from the University of Palermo in Italy in 2008, followed by an MSc in Applied Geosciences from the same institution in 2011. His passion for research led him to pursue a PhD in Sedimentology at the University of Manchester in the UK, which he successfully completed in 2015. Successively, he continued working as a postdoctoral researcher in Sedimentology at the University of Manchester from 2015 to 2016, at the Geological Survey of Japan from 2016 to 2017, and later at Shimane University from 2017 to 2019.
Currently, he is working as a researcher in Sedimentary Systems at the University of Bremen. His research interests is on the sedimentary dynamics of modern and ancient coastal systems. This research aims to understand the processes that shape coastal sedimentary systems and how human activities, such as plastic pollution, impact these areas. The approaches used include traditional sedimentological fieldwork combined with the use of drones, laser scanners, 3D models and machine learning.
