BACKGROUND

In today’s fast-paced academic environment, effective note-taking and knowledge management are crucial for research productivity. Obsidian offers a powerful, flexible solution to organize your thoughts, connect ideas, and streamline your research workflow, ultimately enhancing your academic output and creativity.

WORKSHOP GOAL

This hands-on workshop covers a comprehensive introduction to Obsidian, focusing on its application in academic research. We’ll start with basic functionalities, including interface navigation, note creation, and Markdown syntax. Then, we’ll delve into advanced features like note linking, graph view, and customization options.

Throughout the workshop, participants will engage in hands-on exercises and personal reflection to ensure they can effectively apply Obsidian to their own research processes.

WORKSHOP CONTENT

SESSION 1: 16 Oct
Part 1: Basic Functionalities
  • Introduction Obsidian’s basic functionalities: creating notes, markdown syntax etc.
  • Hands-On-Session: Your first steps with Obsidian
Part 2: Advanced Features and Customization
  • Linking notes, graph view, tags and metadata
  • Customization options: plugins, interface
  • Hands-On-Session: Building a linked network, installing plugins
Part 3: Practical Applications for Research
  • A guide to note-taking systems and self-organization techniques that can be implemented using Obsidian
  • Hands-On Session: Mapping your current organizing tools/methods, reflecting on Obsidian’s potential role and developing a personal integration plan

SESSION 2: 19 Nov
  • Get-together: Reflection, troubleshooting, peer feedback, collaborative learning

TARGET AUDIENCE & PRIOR KNOWLEDGE

The event is open to all researches from the University of Bremen as well as other institutions of the U Bremen Research Alliance and DataNord partners. Please note, however, that the workshop will have a particular focus on the challenges of the humanities, although these are transferable to other disciplines.

TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS

Participants should bring:
  • Their own computer with Obsidian software (free of charge) installed.
  • Access to WLAN (eduroam).

ABOUT THE TRAINER

Nele Fuchs works as a data scientist at Data Science Center Bremen. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Philosophy and Material Culture: Textile (CvO University of Oldenburg) and a Master’s degree in Transcultural Studies (University of Bremen). As a Data Scientist in the Humanities, she supports researchers in the fields of Digital Humanities, FAIR-compliant qualitative research data, and data science. She leverage her experience with sensitive qualitative data.
