BACKGROUND
Surveys are widely used in research across all disciplines, yet many available survey platforms come with limitations such as high costs, restrictions on participant numbers and purpose of use, or concerns about data security and GDPR (DSGVO) compliance.
EUSurvey is an open-source, GDPR-compliant, and freely accessible software solution funded by the European Commission. It allows researchers to design, distribute, and administer web surveys efficiently, making it a valuable alternative to commercial platforms.
EUSurvey is well-suited for large-scale surveys, supporting up to 40,000 participants. A wide variety of form fields can be created in a user-friendly online editor, available in 23 languages. It offers automatic translation of questionnaires, ensuring accessibility for multilingual research projects, and allows multiple researchers to jointly edit a questionnaire, enabling collaborative working. The platform supports responsive and accessible design, making surveys easy to complete across different devices while complying with accessibility standards. In addition to survey implementation, EUSurvey offers basic analysis and visualization options to gain an initial overview of results. For more advanced statistical analyses, collected data can be exported in common table formats for integration with statistical software such as R, SPSS, or Stata.
WORKSHOP GOAL
Are you planning to conduct a web survey for your research but unsure how to implement it effectively? Do you want a GDPR-compliant, free, and yet powerful tool for designing and distributing surveys?
This training will equip you with the practical skills needed to create and manage web surveys using EUSurvey. You will learn how to create a structured survey, implement different question types, apply filters, customize layouts, and distribute surveys in open and closed modes. The workshop also covers response management, data visualization, and exporting results for statistical analysis.
By the end of the workshop, you will have hands-on experience with EUSurvey and be able to design and implement a functional web survey for your research.
WORKSHOP CONTENT
In this workshop, we will cover the following topics:
-
Overview of available web survey tools
- Strengths and limitations of EUsurvey
- Step-by-step guide to structuring surveys and creating different question types
- Applying conditions and filters
- Customizing survey layout
- Testing, activating, and distributing surveys
- Utilizing existing instruments
- Data analysis and visualization options in EUSurvey
- Exporting raw data for further analysis in statistical software (e. g. R, Python, SPSS or Stata)
TARGET AUDIENCE & PRIOR KNOWLEDGE
Researchers from all disciplines and career stages who wish to implement web surveys as part of their research. Basic knowledge of questionnaire design and web survey design are an advantage (e. g. covered in our other workshops), but not a must.
